Potts models with competing interactions
The mock A N N N I model is generalised in replacing the Ising spins by q-state Potts variables. Performing exact dedecoration transformations for general q and using Monte Carlo techniques in two dimensions for q = 3, a multitude of distinct spatially modulated long-range ordered phases, as well as phases with algebraic order, are found 10 spring from a multiphase point.
متن کاملPattern formation in systems with competing interactions
There is a growing interest, inspired by advances in technology, in the low temperature physics of thin films. These quasi-2D systems show a wide range of ordering effects including formation of striped states, reorientation transitions, bubble formation in strong magnetic fields, etc. The origins of these phenomena are, in many cases, traced to competition between short ranged exchange ferroma...
متن کاملCompeting Interactions in DNA Assembly on Graphene
We study the patterns that short strands of single-stranded DNA form on the top graphene surface of graphite. We find that the DNA assembles into two distinct patterns, small spherical particles and elongated networks. Known interaction models based on DNA-graphene binding, hydrophobic interactions, or models based on the purine/pyrimidine nature of the bases do not explain our observed crossov...
متن کاملLattice polymers with two competing collapse interactions
We study a generalized model of self-avoiding trails, containing two different types of interaction (nearest-neighbour contacts and multiply visited sites), using computer simulations. This model contains various previously studied models as special cases. We find that the strong collapse transition induced by multiply-visited sites is a singular point in the phase diagram and corresponds to a ...
متن کاملCompeting interactions create functionality through frustration.
L ike Buridan’s Ass—and somewhat ironically—we often feel frustrated if given more choice than expected. Yet, the converse appears to be true as well. Frustration that results from the impossibility of satisfying all competing interests simultaneously itself implies a greater diversity of distinct behaviors for the overall system. Nature seems to use just this unsettling device of built-in conf...
